The Cast of Characters.
Four distinct cutthroat species are the only trout native to Wyoming. They are all concentrated in the vast northwest corner of Wyoming’s numerous and majestic mountain ranges. Each species poses its own challenges to finding and finally hooking into one, but Andrew has completed this challenge several times, and has crafted a plan for folks who want to complete this challenge within one week.
Bonus: Three of the four species are currently recognized in a broader quest… The Western Native Trout Challenge!
The Western Native Trout Challenge is a multi-state effort hosted by the Western Native Trout Initiative . Through this interactive map, you can learn about where you can responsibly catch different native trout and char species in 12 western states, earning one or more achievement awards. If you are interested in this journey, ask Andrew. We will have the chance to catch 3 qualifying species in 1 state on this trip!
Colorado River Cutthroat Trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii pleuriticus)
Species description: Typically olive-green to brown on the dorsal (back) side with golden-yellow to orange and red on the lateral (sides) surface. Spotting in all cutthroat is variable among populations and individuals. That said, a typical Colorado River Cutthroat has dark, black spots -- often larger than other cutthroat -- with the largest spots concentrated toward the tail.
Species history: Colorado River cutthroat historically occupied most cool-water habitats of the Colorado River watersheds in Colorado, southern Wyoming, eastern Utah, extreme northwest New Mexico and northeastern Arizona. Today they are found in less than 20 percent of their historic habitat and mostly in isolated streams at river headwaters. In Wyoming, Colorado River cutthroat can be found in the Little Snake River drainage near Baggs, the north slope of the Uinta Mountains along the Utah border near Mountain View and in the upper Green River drainage near Big Piney.
Bonneville Cutthroat Trout (Oncorhynchus clarki utah)
Species description: The Bonneville cutthroat is typically dark-olive to brown on the dorsal (back) side with yellow to cream and grey on the lateral (side) surface. Spotting in all cutthroat is variable among populations and individuals. That said, a typical Bonneville cutthroat has dark, black spots -- often more uniformly distributed across the body than with other cutthroat -- with less concentration of spotting toward the tail than with other cutthroat in the Wyoming Cutt-Slam.
Species history: Bonneville cutthroat were historically found in the Bonneville Basin, including suitable habitat within portions of Utah, Idaho, Wyoming and Nevada. Scientists once believed pure strains of Bonneville Cutthroat were extinct. However, with the rediscovery of native populations and considerable restoration efforts by fisheries professional, nearly 70,000 acres of lakes and 850 miles of streams are home to Bonneville cutthroat today. In Wyoming, Bonneville cutthroat can be found in the Bear River drainage near Evanston and the Smiths and Thomas Forks of the Bear River near Cokeville.
Snake River Cutthroat Trout (Oncorhynchus darki behnkei)
Species description: Typically dark-olive to brown on the dorsal (back) side with yellowish-brown to silver or brassy bronze on the lateral (sides) surface. Spotting in all cutthroat is variable among populations and individuals. A typical Snake River Cutthroat has numerous small, relatively evenly-sized dark, black spots covering the entire body except the belly.
Species history: Snake River cutthroat occupy most of their historic range in the Snake River above Palisades, and its major tributaries including the Gros Ventre, Hoback, Greys and Salt rivers. Snake River cutthroat with variable-sized spotting patterns are found in the Snake River drainage. All cutthroat from the drainage will be counted toward the Snake River cutthroat component of the Cutt-Slam.
Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii bouvieri)
Species description: The Yellowstone cutthroat is typically olive-green to brown on the dorsal (back) side with yellowish-brown to silver on the lateral (sides) surface. A typical Yellowstone cutthroat has dark, black spots with spots concentrated toward the tail and few -- if any -- spots on the head.
Species history: The historical range was upstream of Shoshone Falls in southwest Idaho on the Snake River and its tributaries. It also existed across the Continental Divide in Yellowstone Lake and the Yellowstone River, and its tributaries downstream to the Tongue River. Today they occupy somewhere around 40 percent of their historic habitat with several large robust populations. In Wyoming, Yellowstone cutthroat can be found in a few small streams in the Bighorn Mountains near Sheridan, the Absaroka Mountains between Cody and Dubois and throughout most of Yellowstone National Park.
Field Journal:
As the plane lands and the doors open, the cool and crisp Wyoming air rushes in. Stepping out of the aircraft, the towering granite Tetons dominate the view in the valley. Gathering our luggage, Andrew is there to meet us in a comfortable, luxury SUV. And that’s where our adventure really begins.
Andrew is professional and friendly and begins setting the scene for what the next week entails, as the wildlife and scenery capture our attention out the windows.
We arrive a few hours later in the mountain-surrounded tiny town of Bondurant to our mountain modern home. The views are stunning. Every guest has a private, comfortable room where we have a moment to ourselves to get settled. Upon joining the group again in the lush community spaces of the home, our on-site chef has charcuterie boards and our favorite adult beverages at the ready. We discuss our plans for the next week, as Andrew guides us through everything, answering all our pressing questions with confidence and levity. We have casting lessons in the field adjacent while enjoying cocktails and the exploding beauty of the sunset, before we retire to our privacy and get some rest. This adventure will be epic!
We arise early to the smell of coffee and a hearty breakfast. Andrew is caffeinated and ready to guide us through Wyoming’s most stunning landscapes in search of four native species of cutthroat trout. Today, we head two hours into the Wyoming range.
A local expert guide is waiting when we arrive at our first location, a large, rolling creek. The beauty is almost overwhelming. The guide gives us the lowdown, and we begin walking the waters in search of the elusive Bonneville cutty.
By midday, we are successful and ready for our custom sack lunches. We sit along the peaceful creek and recount the triumphs of the day so far. Since everyone in the group caught the native fish for which we came, Andrew decides we should give ourselves the chance at a few trophies on the way back to our home base! I’m excited at the possibility of catching a big brown or rainbow on the blue ribbon waters of the Greys River!
As the light lowers in the big, open sky around us, Andrew calls us all in. He has a cooler waiting with crisp white burgundy and celebratory beers. We all cheers the day’s accomplishments with one last look at the healing waters we’ve been hunting that day.
We return to our cozy home with the fire roaring and appetizers waiting. Steaks are sizzling on the grill. Dinner is a joyous occasion as we retell our adventures to each other… the conversation shifts to tomorrow and what awaits, as we enjoy the stars by a fire with cigars and pipes. Tomorrow, we will stick closer to home and hunt giant Snake River cutthroats on the famous Hoback River!
